Treasures of Timbuktu: UNESCO chief promises to investigate scale of Islamist destruction

The Director-General of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation has said a mission is on stand-by to go to Timbuktu, the fabled desert city where retreating Islamist extremists destroyed ancient manuscripts. Irina Bokova went with French President Francois Hollande to Timbuktu this month to assess the damage to the manuscripts and other ancient artifacts.
